Plastic toll processing allows manufacturers to recover and reuse production scrap and waste by outsourcing the sorting, grinding, pelletizing, and compounding of waste plastics. Plastic toll processing helps you be more efficient with your materials, decreasing waste and increasing profits.

Injection molding, blow molding, extruding and other plastic manufacturing processes inevitably produce scrap (waste) materials. Some common reasons for the plastic waste are manufacturing defects, trimmings, purge, and color changeovers, but they are almost always inconsistent and sometimes mixed with other materials, such as metal, paper, or other plastics.

Plastic toll processing has several steps:

  • Size Reduction (shredding / grinding):  The first step is to ensure your waste is at manageable sizes for downstream processing, which often includes preliminary chopping and shredding – which Greenpath handles in-house, like most of our services. The next step is grinding to a consistent industry standard size that can be directly used by an extruder or injection molding machine. Sometimes your manufacturing waste can be returned to you in this state, and reused. Often, though, it needs further toll processing.
  • Washing: Manufacturing waste often has contamination such as paper, metal, or other plastics that must be removed in order to recycle the resin. Greenpath internally has plastic washing technology to liberate, clean, and dry your production scrap.
  • Pelletizing: The next step in plastic toll processing may be to reprocess your plastics into a pellet. The extruding process includes melt filtration and screening to remove foreign materials such as wood, paper, moisture and metals, so that the recycled plastic is almost the same as new plastic.
  • Blending & Packaging: As the final step of plastic toll processing, Greenpath can blend or compound the plastics to create a uniform, high-quality product. It is then packaged as you require and returned to you.

With plastic toll processing, your manufacturing plant does not need recycling knowledge or special equipment: Greenpath Recovery provides a pickup and delivery solution, and simply takes your waste and returns usable plastic product to you, eliminating waste and enhancing profits. In addition, if you need temporary storage or just-in-time delivery, we can make arrangements to assist.

There are significant efficiencies from using a “one stop shop,” in particular with plastic toll processing. Not only can we help discover and reduce problems with our waste audits, but we can use toll processing as part of a closed loop recycling plan or to support your corporate recycling goals — all while processing your other recyclables at the same time, with predictable, fair rates.

Greenpath Recovery is a full-service recycler, processor, and manufacturer. We are vertically integrated with over 25 years of experience in commercial recycling. Our plastic toll processing can keep your commercial recycling in-house, domestic, and creating US jobs – all while supporting not just your corporate sustainability goals, but also your profitability.
